Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans are a great way to keep cool without getting the high
electric bill of using your air conditioner. Let’s look at some of
the things to consider when you decide to install a ceiling fan.
Does the room you want to install the ceiling fan in have attic
access? If it does this will enable me to get up in the attic and
run electrical wiring. Then we would install your ceiling fan
support box. The ceiling fan support box is a heavy duty brace that
has an electrical box attached to it. This brace is made to cary
the weight of your ceiling fan. If you do not have attic access we
can still install your ceiling fan. If there is not attic access we
may have to make holes in the drywall to run the electrical wire
from point A to point B. Of course the holes will be as few and as
minimal as possible.
Next how do we want to turn the fan on? Most people choose to install a hand held or wall mount remote for there ceiling fan. One of the benefits of a remote is that you do not need to get down into the wall to mount switching. This totally avoids possibly having to cut drywall. Also the remote is great to set on your night stand so you don’t have to get out of bed to change speed or turn lights on and off. Some remotes for ceiling fans even have timers and thermostats. That being said we can still hard wire electrical switches however it is more labor intensive.
What fan would you like use? There are many different sizes shapes and colors of ceiling fans available. If you want your ceiling fan to blend in, a white ceiling fan on a white ceiling is a good choice. If you would like your fixture to be more noticed you can get a color that matches your furniture or wood work of the room. Most ceiling fans come with reversible blades witch means you have two color or texture options. Next look at the specs on the fan there are a lot to consider.CFM (cubic feet per minute) this means how much air the fan will move. What type of light bulbs it uses this can make it easy or difficult when you have to replace them. Also make sure that the light kit on the fan will be able to be dimmed, if you want that option. A 52 inch fan will work for most rooms but the manufacture will give recommendations for room size. Basically bigger room bigger fan. How will the fan mount? Some fans can only flush mount some can drop down some can mount on angled ceilings.
This should give you the basics for when you start to consider installing ceiling fans. You can reach me on my contacts page if you have any other questions.
